Injury surveillance during sport events

Systematic monitoring of injury and illness trends over time provides epidemiologic data that are invaluable to protect the health of the athletes – one of the main priorities of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Sports Federations (IF). Identifying high-risk sports is important in order to recognize notable risk factors and injury mechanisms, which in the next step can form the basis for evidence-based preventive measures.
This presentation will summarize surveillance programs during Olympic and Youth Olympic Games from 2008 to 2016, as well as touch into IF-programs. Reflections and practical implications, as well as suggestions for further initiatives and research to protect the athletes´ health will be provided.
